The highly anticipated 2024/25 UK and Ireland tour of Hairspray is now touring to Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre, this vibrant production remains a joyous celebration of Tracy Turnblad’s journey through ambition, love, and social change. The tour promises a fresh yet faithful rendition of this beloved musical, with a talented mix of seasoned performers and new faces, including Katie Brace, who was perfect in the role of Tracy Turnblad.
Brace captures Tracy’s optimism and infectious energy, making her both relatable and endearing. Her singing, especially in numbers like “Good Morning Baltimore” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” was delivered with precision and emotion. Motormouth Maybelle, portrayed by Sasha Monique, was the standout performer of the show. Her powerful voice and commanding stage presence reached a peak in “I Know Where I’ve Been,” earning her resounding applause from the audience.
Comedy was a key highlight, with Neil Hurst as Edna Turnblad and Dermot Canavan as Wilbur Turnblad delivering an unforgettable performance as the comedic duo. Their chemistry and clever ad-libbing, especially during “You’re Timeless to Me,” had the audience in stitches and gave the show a relaxed, spontaneous feel. In fact, their moments of breaking character and interacting with the audience became an unexpected highlight, enhancing the overall atmosphere.
Olly Manley charmed in the role of Link Larkin, while Shemar Jarrett brought charisma and flair as Seaweed. The ensemble performances, particularly in the show-stopping group numbers, were polished and energetic, continuing to elevate the production. The choreography by Drew McOnie remains a standout feature, filled with vibrant 1960s spirit while maintaining a contemporary edge.
There were minor technical issues during the performance, such as microphones not being switched on promptly, but these did little to detract from the overall experience. The show’s upbeat nature, combined with its inclusive themes and dazzling musical numbers, made it the perfect feel-good entertainment for a dreary autumn evening. The audience’s enthusiastic participation during the final number, “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” led to a standing ovation and a palpable sense of joy and community.
Though the projections still need refinement to avoid distracting from the otherwise well-executed visuals, this touring production of Hairspray continues to deliver an electrifying and heartwarming performance. The musical is a testament to the enduring power of its message, offering an uplifting escape filled with memorable performances, energetic dance routines, and a vibrant celebration of 1960s Baltimore.
Hairspray plays at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre until Saturday 19th October where it continues its UK tour.
