REVIEW: Heathers the Musical – Lyceum Theatre – Sheffield

Rating

Heathers the Musical is a contemporary rock musical that follows the story of Veronica Sawyer, a high schooler who yearns to fit in but becomes entangled in a deadly scheme with her rebellious boyfriend, JD, and the notorious clique of mean girls known as the Heathers. This darkly comedic musical explores themes of teenage angst, social pressure, identity, and the often brutal hierarchy of high school life.

The 2024 cast delivers a fresh take on the production, now showing at Sheffield’s iconic Lyceum Theatre. May Tether delivers a captivating performance as Veronica, portraying her inner conflict with remarkable depth and sincerity. Keelan McAuley (Clueless, Grease) brings a chilling intensity to JD, fully capturing his sinister descent into madness with a blend of charm and menace that keeps the audience riveted.

Leading the Heathers is Esme Bowdler (ITV’s I Have a Dream finalist) as Heather Chandler, whose portrayal of the queen bee is as commanding as it is cruel. Sedona Sky, in her professional debut as Heather Duke, and Daisy Twells (Heathers) as Heather McNamara, round out the trio, with Twells delivering a poignant and heart-wrenching performance as the sensitive Heather Macnamara, who struggles under the weight of depression and social pressures. Sky offers a well-grounded performance as Duke with an exceptional command of the character and vocals. ‘Never Shut Up Again’ is an excellent number but has caused significant issues for past performers, but Sky excels in this number.

The ensemble’s chemistry is undeniable, heightening the impact of the production’s most dramatic moments. Standout supporting performances include Amy Miles (as Martha Dunnstock), Lucy Sinclair (as Ms. Fleming/Veronica’s Mom), and Iván Fernández González (as Kurt Kelly), all of whom infuse their roles with humour, emotion, and charm, adding to the show’s layered dynamics.

The musical numbers remain a high point, with audience favourites like “Candy Store,” “Dead Girl Walking,” and “Beautiful” delivering high-energy, infectious moments that have the crowd buzzing. Gary Lloyd’s sharp, dynamic choreography breathes life into each number, while the visual impact of David Shields’ set design and Ben Cracknell’s lighting creates a perfect backdrop, immersing the audience in the world of Westerberg High. Dan Samson’s sound design ensures the music and dialogue come through with crystal clarity, amplifying every emotional beat.

While Heathers the Musical at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre delivers stellar performances across the board, it’s hard to overlook that some of the cast members don’t convincingly look like high school seniors. Although their talent and energy are undeniable, the age disparity can be a little distracting at times, especially when the narrative hinges on the intense pressures of teenage life. That said, the cast’s chemistry and commitment to their roles help smooth over this minor issue, keeping the focus firmly on the gripping story and dynamic musical numbers. Furthermore, some issues with diction were present and some mics were turned off before a character had stopped speaking leading to some clarity issues.

The Lyceum Theatre in Sheffield provides a stunning venue for this five-star production, adding a touch of elegance to the darkly comedic tone of Heathers. With an outstanding cast, unforgettable music, and a gripping storyline, this 2024 run of Heathers the Musical is a true highlight of the season. The show expertly balances humor and emotion while addressing themes that resonate deeply with modern audiences. If you’re seeking an entertaining yet thought-provoking evening, Heathers the Musical at the Lyceum Theatre is a must-see.

Heathers plays at the Lyceum until Saturday 5th October where it will continue its UK tour.
