The UK tour staging of & Juliet playing at Theatre Royal Nottingham this week delivers an empowering and modern twist in the classic Shakespearean tale Romeo and Juliet, injecting it with with uplifting energy and a playlist of popular pop anthems. This musical reframes Juliet’s story which allows her to choose her own path through life beyond the original tragic ending. The Nottingham cast brings this to life through enthusiasm and dynamic stage presence.
Juliet, performed by Gerardine Sacdalan, was nothing short of remarkable. Her vocal talent is evident through stage numbers like ‘… Baby one my time’ and ‘Roar’ through precise vocal control which is both technically expressive and deeply emotional. She becomes a vocal powerhouse through Max Martin’s Score yet has the precision to express soft intimate feelings within her singing.
Jay McGuiness who is known for being a member of the famous band The Wanted and winner of Strictly Come Dancing became part of this magical cast through the role of Shakespeare. His portrayal adds charm and whit to the musical infused with entertainment. Although his vocal performance may not be as demanding as some of his cast, his transition to musical theatre was engaging and charismatic.
His comedic timings were prominent through his exchanges with the phenomenal Lara Denning who played Anne Hathaway, Shakespeare’s wife. She adds sincerity as the character demands to be heard particularly through her performance of ‘That’s the Way It Is’ as the audience watch her go through a journey of self-discovery and liberation. Her character is definitely one that you will be thinking about after the curtain falls.

One character that stood out was the performance of May, executed by Jordan Broatch, which offered a subtle representation of identity through a non- binary individual who is on their own journey throughout the show. May goes through their own challenges and struggles which is expressed through the performance of ‘I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman’ which highlights their gender fluidity and celebration of self-discovery. Not only does this character entertain but teaches the audience about internal struggles that many people face.
One of the highlights of this play is though the love story of Lance, played by Lee Latchford- Evans a member of the pop group Steps, and Angelique who was played by Sandra Marvin. Their synergy is filled with hilarious humour providing the most entertaining and dynamic relationship in the musical. Their duet ‘Everybody’ is injected with comedic choreography which i’m positive will leave you in fits of laughter. Both characters provide a sub-plot that further expresses the idea of empowerment that is highlighted perfectly throughout this show.
& Juliet is a vibrant, enchanting celebration of love, self- discovery and empowerment. With a diverse cast that allows serious societal issues to be portrayed in a light hearted, witty way. The blend of iconic pop hits and liberation leaves you feeling exhilarated and inspired. Whether you are a fan of Musical Theatre, Shakespearean Plays, pop music, or light hearted wit, then the performance of & Juliet is certainly a show you should not miss.
& Juliet is playing at the Theatre Royal Nottingham until Saturday 19th April 2025 where it will continue its UK tour.
